Prayer Is the Battle

A confession: for all my talk of solitude and interiority, I have just as much stubborn pack-mule spirit in me as the next person who struggles to pray. A friend once described this state of mind so well that it made me laugh:

Prayer is such a strange animal- I can expound on its value but I inexplicably am so hesitant to practice it. I surprise myself with my own irrationality quite often when it comes to the spiritual disciplines.

– John Dimeo

A month ago, Y came home from work and quoted a speaker he’d heard who had paraphrased Oswald Chambers: “Prayer is not preparation for the battle; prayer is the battle.” (The original words can be found here.)

I’ve heard similar statements before, but those words jolted me. Lethargy seeps in to my prayer life when I forget that this is the ground where change happens.

So in what may be the shortest post of this series, I’m taking these words to heart again today, and making use of them to pray for those whose paths cross mine, including you.

It’s a privilege to have you visit today, friends. Happy Thursday.
